Diversity & Bishop Martino
Diversity & Bishop Martino - Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 7:44PM EST
WILKES-BARRE -- Bishop Joseph Martino of the Scranton diocese is receiving both criticism and praise for his disapproval of a gay rights speaker at Misericordia University.
Misericordia says as an institution of higher learning it's important to discuss a variety of viewpoints and that it's deeply committed to it's Catholic mission.
It went on to host speaker Keith Boykin who is an advocate for homosexual causes despite the Bishop's "absolute disapproval".
Now Bishop Martino is questioning the university's efforts to maintain it's Catholic identity and is even suggesting the university dissolve it's Diversity Institute, which co-sponsored Boykin's address.
Is the Bishop doing the right thing to protect and preserve his faith? Does Misericordia University have an obligation to discuss and address a variety of issues, including those that go against Catholic teachings?
WYOU Interactive discusses the issues with Dr. Charles Davis, Chancellor of Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Rev. Daniel Gunn of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. | |
