Williamsport, Lycoming County-

Two people were hospitalized in Williamsport after separate domestic violence attacks less than 24 hours apart.

Williamsport police say 30-year-old Tyree Gates shot his girlfriend, Danielle Barnes, in the chest around 2:30 Sunday afternoon.

The dispute allegedly revolved around Gates' internet activities at an apartment the two share in the 800 block of Hepburn Street.

Don Michaels, a friend of Gates, was shocked to hear the news.

Michaels noted, "They're always respectful towards each other. Whatever happened must have been something devastating."

Gates was taken into custody. Barnes is in serious condition following surgery for her injuries.

Just about 17 hours later, police responded to a report of a stabbing at an apartment at 235 West Third Street in the city's downtown.

Officers say 26-year-old Charlotte Battle stabbed her boyfriend, Edward Evans, in the arm with a steak knife. She was allegedly upset because he made their bed after she asked him not to.

In abusive situations, counselors say the first thing a victim should do is find a safe place away from the attacker.

YWCA Wise Options Director Deborah Shivetts said, “Go to a next door neighbor, pound on the wall. If they have access to a phone, call 9-1-1.”

Then, Shivetts says, those victims need to hold the perpetrators accountable.

She explained, “Our advocates will walk them all the way through the court system, give them all their options, do safety planning with them.”

People we spoke with say they hope the rising tide of domestic violence can be curbed here in the city.

Michaels added, "I think couples need to do more stuff together, instead of being separate. Embrace each other's presence and all that."

Tyree Gates and Charlotte Battle remain behind bars at the Lycoming County Prison.
