Donations Pour In to Try to Save Bloomsburg K-9s

Donations Pour In to Try to Save Bloomsburg K-9s - Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 7:09PM EST

BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY- Donations started pouring in immediately after Eyewitness News first told you about a Columbia County police department cutting K-9's from its force.
Bloomsburg officials made the decision in January due to budget cuts. Within days, people and businesses donated thousands of dollars to keep K-9's on the job.

So far, people sent in nearly $9,000 and they've pledged thousands more -- if the K-9 program comes back. Police Chief Leo Sokoloski said, “We haven't cashed any checks, and the money is in safe keeping until council moves ahead."

Council voted this past week to give back-pay to officers who took home the K-9's. It's a union law.

Council will discuss the long-term sustainability of the program at its next meeting before accepting donations and bringing back the dogs.
