Drought Warning in Clinton Co., Drought Watch Expanded

Drought Warning in Clinton Co., Drought Watch Expanded - Friday, October 5, 2007 at 1:15PM EST

Our dry September and dry start to October have really taken their toll on area water supplies. Friday the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection expanded the Drought Watch to include our entire area with the exception of Lackawanna, Pike and Wayne Counties.

A Drought Warning was issued for Clinton County, the only county in the Commonwealth to receive that designation. The north-central part of Pennsylvania is hardest hit by the drought, with record low-water stream flows and a sharp decline in groundwater, surface water and reservoir levels according to the DEP.

In Lock Haven, Clinton County mandatory water restrictions are in place because of the very low reservoir levels. Other public water suppliers have had to purchase water from other systems or truck in water. Elsewhere in the state, 80 public water systems are under either voluntary or mandatory water restrictions.

A drought watch is the first and least severe of the state’s three drought watch declarations. It calls for a voluntary 5 percent reduction in non-essential water use. A drought warning — also a voluntary measure — asks users to reduce water consumption by 10 to 15 percent.
