Drug Dealers Arrested in Street Level Sweep - Monday, October 5, 2009 at 5:25PM EST

Shamokin, Northumberland County-

A big drug bust was the talk of the town Monday morning in Shamokin. Drug enforcement agents fanned out and arrested dozens of street level dealers in the area.

The message was clear. Illegal drugs and drug dealers won't be tolerated. It was welcome news for neighbors who say drugs are a major issue here.

Cindy Wheary said, "The bigger cities, I'm sure, are worse. But for Shamokin being as small as it is, it's a big problem."

Maryann Stone said, "I'm not surprised to hear that. There are a lot of drugs going on in Shamokin. (But I’m) real happy. Get the druggies off the street."

Many of the dealers were arrested for selling traditional street drugs like heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. But we're told officials also seized a significant amount of prescription drugs.

Undercover agents and confidential informants made more than 60 controlled drug buys during the investigation.

Authorities say they're drawing a proverbial line in the sand and protecting victims of drug-related crimes.

PA Attorney General Tom Corbett explained, "Some member of a family is a victim, where it may cause violence or domestic abuse. Some store, some business could be a victim, through either retail theft or an actual robbery in order to feed that habit. So I'm tired of hearing people say drugs are a victimless crime."

Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini noted, "We're not putting up with people peddling their poison here. If you're going to sell drugs in our county, you're going to be arrested."

Shamokin residents commended police for trying to clean things up.

Wheary added, "They're doing their best. But I think more people need to come together and be more aware with the crime watch and things like that."

Drug agents expect to make several more arrests in this part of Northumberland County.
