Drug Raid Nets 20 in Central PA

Drug Raid Nets 20 in Central PA - Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 7:25PM EST

Sunbury, Northumberland County-
A multiple county drug raid in central Pennsylvania Thursday nabbed several suspected drug dealers.

One by one, suspected street-level drug dealers in and around Northumberland County were processed at the Sunbury Police Department.

Nearly twenty in all- accused of selling everything from marijuana, to prescription drugs, to heroin.

Northumberland County District Attorney Anthony Rosini said, “We’ve seen a rise in crime, especially violent crime, and I attribute a large part of that to drug use, drug trafficking, and people committing crimes to obtain money to purchase drugs.”

People around here say they’re happy with the efforts to combat the area’s drug problem.

Deb Moyer, of Sunbury, noted, “It’s good. They need to keep up. I mean it’s a small town and people are afraid to be walking down the streets.”

Police from several local departments, as well as the Northumberland Montour Drug Task Force, and the Attorney General’s office, took part in Thursday’s raid.

They say the message is clear. Drug dealing will not be tolerated in this area.

Rosini explained, “It lowers the quality of life for all of us. So it’s something we need to do to keep our streets clean, to keep them safe for our children.”

People in Sunbury say they appreciate the enforcement effort, and only wish police had the funding to do even more.

Moyer added, “I think they’re doing about as much as they can, given the financial world right now. I mean, all cities are working on a tight budget, so…”

Police tell us their investigation included many undercover buys from the alleged dealers arrested Thursday.

They believe this bust will lead to bigger arrests down the road.

One of the suspects in Thursday’s raid, Christopher Amadeo, of Northumberland, was already jailed on an unrelated rape charge.
