(WILKES-BARRE/KINGSTON, Luzerne County) - Many of us are pinching pennies to help cover the costs of those rising prices at the pump.

The amount we're paying for a gallon of gasoline is growing by the day.

So now, some people are leaving their cars at home and catching a ride on the bus. Thursday, June 19th is “Dump The Pump" day with the Luzerne County Transportation Authority.

Here’s how it works, you pay a $1.00 fare as you board the bus and your pass is good for unlimited use the entire day.

On and off for six years, Rashidat Subair has taken public transportation to get to work and run errands. Let's just say it's her back up plan when certain things fall apart.

Rashidat Subair is from Wilkes-Barre, "Right now the car doesn't start, so I have it at the mechanic. The car hasn't been running for two weeks now."

Subair and several others riding the bus ditched their cars for different reasons. Amy Stokes of Forty Fort got rid of her ride two years ago. Amy Stokes added, “It's cheaper. I don't have to pay for gas or a car payment or car insurance or anything like that."

For one day this Thursday all riders will get a break on their bus fare. Renee Narsavage told Eyewitness News, "All I know, it's a dollar a day. You can ride wherever you want to go."

It's all part of the "Dump The Pump" program, hosted by the Luzerne County Transportation Authority. Stan Strelish is the Executive Director of the L. C.T. A. "They can see the cleanliness of the busses, on time performance of busses, opportunity for people to see how effective and efficient the system is." Riders can take advantage of any of the 17 routes in the L. C.T. A. system for just a buck all day long.

Stokes stated, "I think it's a great idea. I hope more and more people ride the bus." Statistics show prices at the pump have made their mark on recent ridership numbers.

Strelish added, "Ridership's increased by 11 percent in the last year. And we anticipate a slight increase in this point on.” It's another cheaper outlet, for people like Rashidat Subair.

Rashidat Subair added, "Yeah, because every time the car's not working that's when gas prices go higher."

Also in effect this summer is the student summer pass. For a one-time $20.00 fee, students ages 18 and under will get unlimited bus rides on all routes at any time. The pass is good from now through August 31st. Call, write or stop by the L. C.T. A.
