PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY-The Department of Environmental Protection is investigating an illegal tire pile in Plains Township.
Firefighters were tipped off about a massive tire pile three days before Thanksgiving.
They believe someone backed into this area along North River Street in the middle of the night dumped the tires and drove off.
The County's Re-Development Authority apparently owns the land and never even knew what happened until WBRE News informed them.
Executive Director Allen Bellas believes this is the work of someone trying to make a quick buck.
"They have tires they don't know how to get rid of. Someone comes around with a dump truck and offers to take the tires off their hands for two to three dollars a piece and then illegally dumps the tires.
Bellas also says he'll talk to PENN-Dot - who owns the road about closing up the area.
Bellas isn't sure when the tire pile will be cleaned up.
He says he'll first have to determine where the property lines are.
