Dunmore Council Approves 36% Tax Hike

Dunmore Council Approves 36% Tax Hike - Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 11:24AM EST

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- People living in Dunmore are reacting to a huge projected tax hike next year. Dunmore Borough Council voted to raise taxes by a whopping 36%. Dunmore taxpayers say the tax hike won't be easy to swallow in this tough economy.

Dina Musko says, “It’s gonna be difficult, very difficult, especially for the people that are on a fixed income. I feel sorry for them."

At a meeting Monday night, council voted 4-3 to hike taxes by 12 mills next year. That translates to just over $100-dollars per household. Sheila Hallinan says, I'm not happy about it, but I don't think we have much of a choice in Dunmore. We have to pay for what we have and we do have a lot of good things."

A mounting debt in the hundreds of thousands of dollars is one of the major reasons for the tax hike. Council President Melanie Naro cast the deciding vote and says it had to be done. We don't want our kids and our grandkids to have to pay for the sins of the past. Our retirees right now are making more money than they ever did when they were working," she says.

As Naro looked over budget numbers she says no jobs will be lost and no services like police, fire or DPW will be cut.

Dunmore council says it's still working with department heads to cut spending where it can to reduce the debt. If the 36% tax hike sticks, council hopes to set up a payment plan for people to make it easier to absorb the cost.
