Earth Friendly Brewery Opens in the Poconos - Monday, June 1, 2009 at 9:00PM EST
SHAWNEE-ON-DELAWARE, MONROE COUNTY - Pete Kirkwood opened the doors of a brand new brewery at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort. He said, "We're really striving to make the very best possible beer that human hands can make."
Kirkwood and Brewmaster Leo Bongiorno run the new ShawneeCraft brewery. The men want to serve beer with great flavor that doesn't sour the earth. "We want to be as ecologically sensitive as we can," said Kirkwood.
Bongiorno added, "All the product that we manufacture here is minimum 93% organic in ingredient." Much of the brewing system and building are recycled. The building once housed an ice arena. Bongiorno said he was able to take a lot of the ice cooling equipment and turn it into beer making gear.
Bongiorno said the way he arranged the machinery will also help save energy. It prevents some heat and water waste. He said, "We're trying our darndest to have the lowest possible carbon footprint that we can produce here."
Beer lovers say it doesn't seem they're sacrificing quality to do that. Kyle Irwin remarked, "It's excellent. It's bold. It's refreshing. It's delicious."
"For now you can get ShawneeCraft beer on tap at the resort but eventually the Brewmaster hopes to have it available in bottles or kegs throughout the Poconos.
The ShawneeCraft Tap Room is scheduled to open some time before the Fall. | | |
