EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY - For the first time, a public park in Luzerne County is about to go smoke free.
People who visit Veteran's Memorial Park in Edwardsville will no longer be allowed to smoke as of Monday afternoon. Signs will be posted on Monday to tell people about the change. Borough leaders recently passed the ban in an effort to limit kid's exposure to second-hand smoke.
Reaction to the change has been mixed.
"I don't need to be stepping on cigarette butts and kids should be able to play without being around cigarette butts," Salvatore Perrone of Edwardsville said.
"It's outside. Why should it be smoke free? It's not closed in. It's out in the open. The winds blowing, so whats that hurting," Jack Getz of Edwardsville said.
Borough leaders say the smoking ban at Veteran's Memorial Park will not cost the community any money. | |

Yes, it will cost money. Smokers bring a tangible amount of taxes to the state. Many, if not most people are smoking in US. Smokers are equal taxpayers. If smokers stop going to the parks - there you have it.
