Watsontown, Northumberland County-

A New York man with local ties is trying to save the recently-closed historic Watson Theatre.

Like many who've lived in Watsontown, Matthias Sundberg wants to save the theatre he marveled at as a youngster.

Sundberg noted, "I'm working in editing, film, and production right now, so basically the movie theater launched my career ultimately."

But financial support has been lacking, so he went online, launching several websites to promote the cause.

Sundberg explained, "I thought if I did it on the internet, I can get it (donations) from all over the place. And so far the support has been pretty overwhelming."

The support may be there, but the pledges have been small so far.

Sundberg believes he needs about $200,000 by mid-March to save the Watson Theatre. So far he's only raised a little over $500 in donations.

That's why he's asking for the public's help.

Watsontown Area Business Association Vice-President Karen Bottorf said, "It sounds like a wonderful idea. I don't think there's anyone in town who wants to see the theatre close. But the bottom line is there has to be enough financial support for it."

Sundberg says if he raises the money, the theatre would become a non-profit community foundation.

It would show first runs, classic and horror movies, and host independent film festivals. Classes could also be taught here.

Skeptics point out there will need to be extra money for utility expenses and other costs.

But no one is saying it's impossible.

Bottorf added, "You can't ever underestimate the power of people when they join together."

There are a number of places you can go for more information or to get involved in the effort to save the Watson Theatre.
