Elderly Couple Rescued from Burning Home - Monday, May 11, 2009 at 5:18PM EST
FISHING CREEK TWP., COLUMBIA COUNTY- Flames and smoke take over a home as an elderly couple is trapped inside. A family rushed to the scene of a burning house to rescue two grandparents inside. The early morning blaze in Columbia County is now under investigation by state police, while the elderly victims are hospitalized.
The sun shines shortly after daybreak and a steady hand is kept spraying down what was a raging fire on Albertson Road around 2:00 A. M.
It was a scene that brought a family to their feet. The couple’s son Dave Albertson said, "Four brothers got mom off the roof I guess. And he had her out there ready to go."
Albertson is talking about the rescue effort for his mom, Pauline Albertson. A grandson, Franklin Bartlow, was a big part of it. "My dad went and got his ladder, put it alongside the house and I got my truck. So I put my truck up to the house and got my grandma off the roof."
Minutes earlier Franklin and his dad had found his grandfather Rubin Albertson trapped inside. "We both went up through and found my pap sitting on the basement steps, so we just went and got him and took my pap out of the house."
Even hours after, smoke continued to billow from the house. A number of crews were still on hand to stablize the scene. Robert Black with the Orangeville Community Fire Company said,
"This is a very rural area out here. There’s no hydrant system or anything like that. It’s all tanker shuttled. That's why we have a lot of companies."
Rubin and Pauline Albertson were lifeflighted to the hospital while firefighters remained at their home, securing the shell of what was left from the family's home they'd lived in for decades. | | |
