HARVEY'S LAKE, LUZERNE COUNTY- An elderly woman is hit and killed in Luzerne County. Police say a car slid out of control, striking 81-year-old Joan Batory.
It happened at Harvey's Lake at about 9:30 Wednesday morning. Police say she was hit and killed while getting her mail and newspaper. Neighbor Pat Casteellano can't believe it. Joan was wonderful. She was the perfect neighbor, she would always watch out house when we weren't here, just a wonderful, wonderful woman," says Casteellano.
Casteellano says getting the mail was Batory's morning routine. But Wednesday morning, police say icy roads led to this car sliding out of control, hitting Batory.
The impact of the accident forced Batory over a guard rail and down by the lake. Police say the driver of the car stopped and stayed on the scene.
Luzerne County Chief Deputy Coroner William Lisman says Batory likely died on impact. He says Batory lived with her elderly husband in the house right across the street from their mailbox, for more than 30 years. "The family is as well as can be expected. They're an elderly couple and neighbors are here and family is here supporting him until his daughters,” says Lisman.
State police were reconstructing the scene late into the afternoon. The Luzerne County District Attorney's office says it's investigating to see if the driver will face charges.
Casteellano says the neighborhood will be there for Batory's husband. "Obviously I was devastated. I actually wasn't quite sure what happened, and went down to see Danny, went down to see what happened and he told me. So we're going to spend some time with them," says Casteellano.
The name of the driver was not released at the time of this story.
