WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY- An early-morning fire leaves an elderly woman dead and her husband badly burned.

The fire in the city's Newberry section destroyed the home at 2326 Dove Street. Flames broke out around 5:00 A.M. and burned out of control for more than an hour, consuming the home.

Firefighters later found the body of a bedridden woman on the first floor. Her husband managed to get out but couldn't save his wife. The couple was married for more than 50-years and the fatal fire leaves neighbors broken up.

Neighbor John Smith said of the couple, "Good marriage. Real close all the time. I mean he took care of her 'till the end. It's one of those things. He'd give up himself to take care of her."

The elderly man injured in the fire was first taken to Williamsport hospital before he was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown. Authorities are not releasing his name or condition or the name of his wife who died.

A State Police Fire Marshal will investigate the fatal Williamsport fire.
