WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY - An emergency shelter which helps women who are homeless has issued an urgent plea tonight. They desperately are in need of volunteers.
For the last four years, Ruth's Place has been operating out of the First United Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre. Officials say right now, they have an average of 25 women a night, but not enough people to run the shelter. If you'd like to volunteer, you must be 18-years-old. Organizers say you can get a lot out of the experience.
"It's very rewarding. The ladies have a lot to give. They have a variety of experiences," volunteer coordinator Julie Benjamin said.
"The fact that women end-up in shelters is very damaging to their self-esteem. To know there is a broad community out there, that cares about what they're doing really does make a difference in their lives," Rev. Keith Benjamin of the First United Methodist Church said.
To help train new volunteers, officials from Ruth's Place are holding a special session next Saturday (Jan. 26th). It will take place from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM.
For more information, or to volunteer, you can call 1-570-822-6817. | |
