WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- Emotions swelled outside 522 South Franklin Street. Hugs were exchanged. Messages were left. Tears were shed. The Luzerne County Coroner's Office confirms two children and an adult male died inside a second-floor apartment.

The first calls for help were made around three o'clock Thursday morning. The raging inferno quickly grew to three alarms. Extra firefighters were called in. Crews worked more than an hour to get the fire under control.

A handful of tenants were lucky and escaped into the freezing cold.

But Yvonne George's granddaughter, 3-year-old Alia Van Pelt, was not one of them.

"My grand baby was a beautiful little girl. I'm sorry she lost her life," George said Thursday night.

The coroner reports five-year-old Angel Torres and 26-year-old Victor Van Pelt also died inside their apartment.

Mourners braved a cold, chilly breeze and a held a moment of silence acknowledging the long road ahead.

"We're going to stick together and get through this. It's gonna be rough, but we'll get through it," Ramanda Moody said.

City fire officials have labeled the nature of the fire accidental.
