SHOHOLA, PIKE COUNTY - A pit bull, which allegedly bit a famous singer two weeks ago in Pike County, will not be put down.

The family of the dog said late Friday afternoon they do not plan on euthanizing Bella at this time. Bella is accused of biting Grammy-award winner Vanessa Carlton on May 2nd.

The owner of Bella told Eyewitness News about the decision in a brief e-mail. It was simply three lines, "Bella is safe, she is not being put down. Miracles do happen."

Bella is accused of biting Vanessa Carlton outside a home on Chris Road. Since the attack, there has been a lot of debate in town about whether Bella should be classified as a dangerous dog and whether she should be put down.

"I just think it's an unfortunate situation for everyone concerned and I don't know," Windy Dog Deli co-owner Deena Slain said. "I don't like to hear Shohola in the news for bad things."

Vanessa Carlton was jogging outside the dog's home, when Bella broke through an invisible, electronic fence and bit her on the leg.

"It's a very tough situation," Peter Mihalick of Shohola said. "Sometimes dogs, whether they be Pitbulls or whatever, see somebody running or something like that -- but the property owners have a responsibility to keep the dog, whether it be on a leash or on their own property."

At first, Bella's owners didn't think they could afford costly insurance if Bella was determined by a judge to be a dangerous dog...but concerned citizens and rescue groups expressed outrage.

"I'm a dog person and I think a puppy deserves a second chance without the high cost of insurance," Fran Hlavacek of Shohola said.

As for Vanessa Carlton, she is currently overseas. Eyewitness News could not get in touch with her family Friday. According to published reports, she suffered only leg pain and was not infected with anything.
