South Williamsport, Lycoming County-
We wondered if gas prices would affect the distance people would travel to check out this year's Little League World Series games. But thanks to the thousands of diehard baseball fans here, the answer to that question was a resounding "no!"
Irene Furness and her family have been heading down to South Williamsport from Corning, New York for the past five years or so. Irene's two boys are Little Leaguers themselves, and love watching the competition.
They say gas prices don't really affect their decision to make the yearly trip. Furness noted, "As we come this way, the gas prices get cheaper. So we come down with half a tank and go back with a full one. And I think we enjoy coming so much that for us that really isn't an issue."
Gina Pauley agrees. She and her family drove all 13 hours from Lanark, Illinois for their first Little League World Series trip. Pauley said, "My husband and son watch it every year on TV so they wanted to come, and that's why we're here."
Dana Gustafson and his family are also here for the first time. They came all the way from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
They were pleasantly surprised to learn that admission to the games is free. Gustafson explained, "We didn't know. We looked it up online and thought, gee how much are tickets going to be and where do you buy them? And it was free. I was surprised the parking was free as well."
Roughly half the license plates in this parking lot are from out-of-state.
To Irene Furness, it's worth the trip no matter the cost to fill the tank. She added, "I just think it's a great place to be, family atmosphere, clean, friendly, and it's a lot of fun."
It just goes to show you can't put a price on a fan's love of the game. | |
