WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- We're all feeling the pinch from those high prices at the pump. It affects so many people in so many ways, including farmers trying to make some cash off their crops.

It is opening day for Wilkes-Barre's 35th annual Farmers Market on Public Square. Marty O’Malia owns and operates O’Malia’s Farms and Greenhouses, "We're getting ready. The seasons starting."

More than two dozen food vendors and farmers including O'Malia came early to set up their tents. And, line up lots of pastries, fresh flowers and vegetables. O’Malia added, "Green beans, yellow beans, broccoli and a few other items off the truck."

Vendors came from all over Northeast PA hoping to cash in on their crafts and crops. Wendy Seymour runs Burdick Creek Gardens. She said,“This is what I do for a living. I grow produce and garlic is our major crop. We'll harvest that crop by the end of July."

There are some first timers, too. Craft vendor Elva Evangelista said, "I’ve never been here before. This is my first time showing my stuff."

Evangelista made these crafts by hand. Ceramics, center pieces, even candy dishes. This year, most say they're dishing out more money to cover the costs of high prices at the pump too. O’Malia told Eyewitness News, "It's biting everybody. The farmers' diesel fuel and gas for trucks... Everything's petroleum based. Your fertilizer, your gasoline, plastic for greenhouses, everything's petroleum based."

Vendors say they're doing everything they can to keep prices low. Still, some stuff will cost extra. Bail Bidniek stated, "My Nut roll. Because of the walnut, it's a quarter only."

Customers like Honesty Bowden say they don't mind paying a little more. Bowden said, “If it's good. It's worth it to have to get. I was a little iffy on the tomatoes, but everything else was great."

The farmers market runs every Thursday through November 20th from 10 am to 4 pm. There will be different themes each week and lots of free entertainment.
