Williamsport, Lycoming County-

Williamsport’s police department is line for a federal boost. We’ve got the details on a grant that could put more cops on the street.

Russell Dersham would love to see more cops protecting his city.

Dersham said, “The reason why I think that is we need the police on the force and if we don’t have them then something’s going to go wrong.”

The United States Attorney General’s Office recently notified city officials that they were being awarded more than $600,000 in stimulus funds earmarked specifically for hiring police.

Many other places were not so lucky.

Williamsport Police Chief Greg Foresman noted, “Some of your bigger cities such as New York City, Chicago, got zero. I’m ecstatic that we were even remotely considered for this money and we’ll definitely use it to the best of our abilities.”

The money would likely be used to hire three new officers for Williamsport.

The grant would pay for the officers’ salaries for their first three years on the job. The city would be responsible for covering their costs for the fourth year.

Williamsport Mayor Gabe Campana explained, “It is a priority of this administration to make this city safer and we have done that in the last 18 months. And there will be money provided to keep those three officers for the fourth year.”

We’re told the addition of the three officers would allow for more seasoned veterans to join the city’s community policing program. That idea was very popular with city residents.

Dershem added, “That will help us out a lot. It really would because without them we’ve got nothing.”

Williamsport’s city council will have the final say on whether or not to accept the grant money. No word yet on when that decision might be made.
