MIFFLINVILLE, COLUMBIA COUNTY- An accident involving a tractor trailer and SUV has closed a portion of Interstate 80. The accident happened in the westbound lanes of the highway on the bridge over the Susquehanna River shortly after 2:00 P. M.
One person is confirmed dead, reportedly the driver of the tractor trailer. We're told several people were pushing a broken down Ford Explorer in the westbound lane. That’s when an 18-wheeler traveling the highway hit the Explorer while it was being pushed.
The truck crashed and burst into flames. The driver was killed. At least one person in the SUV was injured. The people pushing the SUV were able to get out of the way.
State Police closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 between the Mifflinville and Lime Ridge exits. Traffic is backed up for miles on Interstate 80 and local roads like Route 11 are also badly congested.
PennDOT says the closure will last well into Monday evening while crews inspect the bridge.
