WASHINGTON, D. C. - Federal lawmakers from Northeastern Pennsylvania aren't accepting defeat when it comes to stimulus funding for passenger rail service.

They're fighting for millions in federal funding to get a Scranton to New York City rail route on track.

U. S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey along with Congressmen Paul Kanjorski and Tim Holden met, Tuesday, with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

They had his ear about the Lackawanna Cutoff and why they believe it's critical to the local economy.

It's been more than 30 years since passenger rail service existed between Scranton and New York City.

It's estimated to cost more than $500 million to revive it.

The Lackawanna Cutoff was left off the list of $8 billion in approved high speed rail projects that the president announced last week.

But lawmakers argue that re-establishing the Scranton to NYC rail route will create jobs in the short-term and promote economic growth in the long-term.

The senators and congressmen urged the department of transportation to support the Lackawanna Cutoff project in upcoming federal funding opportunities.

Senators Casey and Specter announced there'll be a follow-up meeting with federal and state partners to push for the northeastern pennsylvania rail plan.
