Fighting Bioterrorism from the Poconos

Fighting Bioterrorism from the Poconos - Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 3:53PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG - Experts are predicting terrorists will use a weapon of mass destructing within the next five years. The Blue Ribbon Panel says terrorists are more likely to use a biological weapon than a nuclear one.
Former Senator Bob Graham said a hundred times the number of people who died during the 9/11 attacks could be killed. The commission also said the US government needs to limit the spread of biological weapons.

A biotechnology company in the Poconos has developed a chemical compound that could help fight back against a bio terrorist attack.

Scientists at Chaperone Technologies in East Stroudsburg say they earned a patent for a super antibiotic.

If terrorists unleash a biological attack, scientists may be more helpful than soldiers.

"We think about that when we come in here every day. God forbid that happens," said Kenneth Kovan, CEO of Chaperone Technologies.

Kovan and Michael Sturgess believe they may have found a medical weapon that could fight bio terror threats like Plague.

"It's a whole antimicrobial class that has not been around before," said Kovan.

When they combine their new chemicals with current medicines, they get a super antibiotic.

Kovan said, "What we didn't realize was how significant and how major the response was going to be."

The discoveries made in East Stroudsburg might not just help the military, they could help anyone who has an antibiotic resistant infection.

Sturgess explained, "We've shown through some of our data that this is applicable to lung infections, skin infections, any type of infection that is currently drug resistant.

Kovan and Sturgess are testing the chemicals now. They hope the discoveries made in the Poconos can protect the world from bio terror.

"If it isn't us, I hope it's somebody else, but somebody has to do this work," said Kovan.

The potential medicines are still in the testing stage. The scientists say their invention could be available to doctors in three or four years.
