Fire Causes Millions in Damage to Business

Fire Causes Millions in Damage to Business - Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 04:02AM EST

CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Fire crews on the ground and on ladder trucks poured water early Thursday morning onto a company that was built on 21-years of hard work and investment. "I'm concerned about our customers 'cause there's not too many people who do what we do," said Dyvex Industries co-owner Robert Strony. Dyvex Industries is one of the world's leading suppliers of scented polymers. It injects scented oils into plastics. "If you've ever seen an air freshener hanging in a car chances are we probably made it here." Now a devastating fire leaves Strony and fellow co-owner Joe Depoti out of business. Only one worker was on duty when fire broke out around 2 a. m. "Our employee who was on the night shift actually called me and said he was outside the building and that one of the machines had caught fire," said Strony.

Fire spread rapidly throughout the interior as crews faced heavy smoke -- some of it in thick, black plumes as materials went up in flames. "There's highly flammable oils and liquids in here, plastic polymers here," said Carbondale Fire Chief Thomas Brennan. Concerns about that smoke in the air brought out HazMat crews for air testing. Those concerns were soon put to rest. "There doesn't seem to be any kind of problem with any kind of toxic chemicals or anything in the buildings," said Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency Director Bob Flanagan.

The owners of Dyvex Industries say the fire couldn't have come at a worse time. Business had picked up so much recently that some staff members who had been laid off a couple of months ago were brought back to work. What became a skeleton staff last year at Dyvex had been beefed up. "We were back to 14 and we had about five more who were going back in the next month," said Strony. Dyvex was hustling to fill orders worldwide at the time of the fire -- including for some Fortune 500 companies. "This is the best year we've ever had. Sales today equal any year that we had in the past," said Strony,

Now Strony worries not only about his business, but also its clients. "I don't know where they can go to get the product and then even if we rebuild the business as far as equipment, bricks and mortar, will our customers stay with us?"
