NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- The struggling economy is forcing community service organizations to ask for help, and volunteer fire companies are no different.

The Honey Pot Volunteer Fire Company needs the community's help to invest in its new engine. Their current 1965 truck no longer meets safety standards.

The department is buying a 2003 mini-pumper, at a cost of $100,000, but firefighters say it'll carry the truck into the future.

"This will absolutely be a better thing for the community," said Shane Farrell, a volunteer firefighter.

It doesn't only use a hydrant connection, but also a CAFS, or compressed air foam system.

"It takes a whole lot less water to put out fires, and it's a lot quicker because you're basically coating the fire," added Farrell. "It's a lot safer for firefighters due to the time in which it allows us to put out a fire."

But the safety comes with a price tag of about $800 a month over the next 20 years. The company applies for state and federal grants, but because Honey Pot is an independent fire company, it doesn't always get the help it needs.

"We're not begging for money, but we're here to work and put some good old-fashioned back bone into our company and our efforts," said Chester Kopko, the assistant chief.

The firemen will be hosting several fundraisers hoping the community will support the volunteers who protect them.

Fundraising events:

March 1, 1pm - All You Can Eat Breakfast at Honey Pot Fire Department Headquarters
March 28, 7pm - Honey Pot Ham Raffle at Westside Playground
May 13, all day - Summer Festival at Fire Department Headquarters
Aug 15, TBA - Cabbage Roll
