Fire Destroys Schuylkill County Restaurant, Apartments
Fire Destroys Schuylkill County Restaurant, Apartments - Monday, January 12, 2009 at 09:50AM EST
ASHLAND, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY- A State Police Fire marshal will try to determine the cause of a blaze that destroyed Snyder's Restaurant and an adjoining apartment building in the borough of Ashland.
The fire broke out shortly before midnight on Sunday. Firefighters from Schuylkill, Northumberland and Columbia Counties responded to the alarm. Ashland Fire Chief Phil Groody said the volunteers had to contend with the fire, smoke, and bitter cold temperatures. Groody said, "The ice made everything difficult here - skips, trips and falls. Our ladders are frozen and air packs are all frozen."
Three people who lived in the apartment adjoining the restaurant all got out okay. Chief Groody said Synder's Restaurant has been in business under several different owners since the 1950s.
Crystal Freed said the business and apartments are owned by her dad and grandparents. "They're upset. They just sat there and watched. Nothing they could really do about it," she said. | |
