Fire Destroys Snyder County Sawmill

Fire Destroys Snyder County Sawmill - Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 04:05AM EST

Reported by: Jeremy Deebel
Wednesday April 14 2010
An early morning fire swept through a sawmill in Snyder County. It destroyed the long-time family business.

Family, friends, and neighbors did their best to stay positive as they helped clean up what remains of the Walter Stuck Sawmill in West Perry Township.

Owner Roger Stuck says the mill is a total loss, including the building, the lumber, and several saws, loaders, and other equipment.

Neighbor Donna Snyder recalled the blaze that woke her up just after 5 Wednesday morning. She noted, "The first thing I heard was like a popping or rumbling, and I thought they were unloading logs because they do that throughout the night."

Unfortunately this time, that wasn't the case. Snyder continued, "And then the next thing I heard was two explosions. And when I looked out my front window, the whole thing was engulfed in flames."

Richfield Fire Chief Dale Maneval says 11 departments from four counties spent about 90 minutes bringing the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Dozens of friends and neighbors spent the morning and afternoon helping the Stuck family clean up the mess.

Owners of other local sawmills say firefighters likely never had a chance to save the building. Leonard Kuhns, of Mount Pleasant Mills, explained, "If it was gonna go, it was gonna go. They didn't have a chance. Once it had a five minute start, it was over. Because of all the fine sawdust hanging in the rafters that's very explosive when it's dry."

Thankfully no one was hurt in the blaze. People at the scene say they'll continue to support the Stuck family and help see them through this tough time. Snyder added, "I think the community will come together and help them. Like you said, they're already here moving lumber around. God will be with them."

We're told the Stuck family did not have insurance on the sawmill. They have not yet decided if they will rebuild.
