CLIFFORD, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY- The cause of a house fire in Clifford, Susquehanna County is still under investigation. Flames broke out overnight forcing three tenants from their duplex. Lucky for them a family pet is being credited with saving their lives.

The Shinn’s say they're standing here today, all thanks to their mutt ‘Millie.’ Firefighters from four counties attacked a fire at their two family home on Route 106 in Clifford.

But, it was ‘Millie’ (the dog) here who woke Jodi Shinn and her Daughter Megan They got the other tenant Greg Rudick up and out of the house.

Kathy Elkins lives right next door, "She told me that if it wasn't for their dog, because the dog woke them up, they probably still would've been inside." Kathy Elkins lives right next door with her husband and son. Korey Elkins also spoke with WBRE News, “I was sleeping and all I heard was banging and hollering and Robert (Kochmer) came upstairs and woke me up."

The family rushed outside and tried to save their own belongings, all while helping the neighbors too. Kochmer stated, "I grabbed the fire extinguisher and by the time I got back down here it was up in the roof." Korey Elkins added, "I was kind of shocked to see the house next door on fire, so I got stuff ready to take it out, and I got hockey equipment out and valuables." The fire's intensity also made its mark on one side of their home.

Kathy Elkins stated, "They told us to keep an eye on the inside if the walls started getting warmer and if we had anything of value to get out of those rooms we should take it out now. Clifford's fire chief says 48 Main Street is a total loss. The fire isn't suspicious, but a State Police Fire Marshall will investigate the neighbors’ claims.

Kochmer added, "The fire wasn't too big, it was on the backside of the porch over here and it wasn't too bad at all." Elkins stated, "It just kind of spread into the house and just went to the roof and fully engulfed the house."

The Shinn's aren't sure if they'll stay with neighbors or let the American Red Cross assist them.
