LOCK HAVEN, CLINTON COUNTY -It is day one of fire prevention week and day four of Clinton County’s drought warning. Fire officials in Lock Haven say this could be the most crucial week they have faced in more than one hundred years. Clinton County was placed under a drought warning last Friday which means fire protection is a serious challenge. Hand in Hand Hose Company Chief Robert Neff said, "Several weeks ago the city manager asked me to devise a plan in order for us to get off the fire hydrants in the event we had a fire in the city because of the problems they were having with the reservoir and drought.”
Chief Neff came up with two solutions. Plan A calls for help from five area fire stations. "We talked to mutual aid companies and asked them to provide us with tankers in the event that we had an emergency," said Chief Neff.
Plan B will utilize the Susquehanna River. They'll take a hose, swing it over the dyke and drain water from the river if needed for fires in the downtown business district.
Chief Neff says he is urging area residents to check smoke detectors’ batteries. In addition, he is asking hunters to not light any unnecessary fires in the woods.
Area residents say they are happy a plan is already formulated. "The firefighters do a pretty good job here in town with, you know, any problems like the drought," said Avis resident Andy Conner.”
Firefighters will be visiting local school this week to hand out safety wrist bands.
