SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY-
Fire broke out Wednesday afternoon destroying nearly everything inside the Schuylkill
Haven Hose Company. Two engines, a trailer and virtually all the equipment are
left in ruins.
An intense fire swept through the
more than 100-year-building Wednesday afternoon. Neighbor Jonathan Young said, “Everything
started billowing, flying over towards our house and everything else.”
Young says there was heavy smoke,
fire and a series of explosions. Members of this fire company were in the
building shortly before the flames broke out. They had just returned from
assisting the Pottsville Fire Department. Company Chief Jim Reed said, “I was
here with two other guys an hour before the alarm came in and there was
absolutely nothing wrong.”
Assistant Chief Glenn Sattizahn says
he had just left when all of this happened. “This one really hits home. I am
the Duty Chief for the Borough, but I'm also Treasurer for this company. So, it
hit home. I don't know what else to say,” added Sattizahn.
News spread fast. Soon, an entire
community poured into the streets to look and support their firefighters, who
at this time, are without a home. An army of helpers gathered at the building trying
to put things back together. However most admit it's going to be a while before
this company is up and running.
Jim Reed said, “It's a place that
you pour your heart into and it's heartbreaking.”
Members of this fire department are
boarding up their doors for security purposes. A State Police Fire Marshal is
now trying to determine what started this fire. It could be a couple of days
before there is a definitive answer.
