PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Firefighters with the Plains Township Fire Department are struggling with a loss Thursday, after hearing one of their own was killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday night. Robert Kubicki was a 35-year firefighter.

"We're just shocked. The whole department is shocked," said Captain Mark Ritsick. "He was my partner, he was in my group, and I was his shift supervisor."

The two worked day shift together Wednesday, just hours before the deadly crash.

"You work with someone so long, you get so close to them," said Jarrod Million, a firefighter. "These guys are like my brothers."

Firefighters here say Kubicki answered thousands of calls in his 35 years here. They say he rarely missed a fire, but when he did, he always had a humorous excuse.

"He'd come in, and we'd start busting him, and we'd be like, 'Bob, where were you?' and he'd say, 'Oh, my pager, I left it in the drawer,'" said Million, chuckling. "He's say, 'Oh, I missed another one.'"

Kubicki's dog even ate his pager once. They say he was an animal lover.

Police are investigating whether or not speed or alcohol played a role in Wednesday night's deadly crash. It happened around 10:30pm on Wilkes-Barre Boulevard.
