Flag Disposal Ceremony - Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 7:06PM EST

PLAINS - A group of veterans in Luzerne County answered the bugle call and came together to give old glory a proper send off.

The American Legion in Plains retired faded and worn flags Saturday. It's something they do every year but this year they say there were fewer flags than usual.

The veterans say it's their responsibility to make sure the stars and stripes are taken care of the right way.

John Conway explained, "Symbolically we cut up one of the flags. The blue field and we separate the stripes and burn that first, and then we burn the rest of the flags."

There was also a 21 gun salute to the flag. Boy Scout Troop 100 helped with the ceremony.
