WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- It was only a test - but it’s a test of floodgates that could prove critical to people who live in one part of Wilkes-Barre.

Firefighters opened the floodgates on Waller Street in Wilkes-Barre. Many homes in this neighborhood are flooded periodically from Solomon Creek.

The test is critical so fire fighters can move quickly to help protect the neighborhood from high water. Wilkes-Barre Assistant Fire Chief Ed Snarski said, “We want to be able to come out here and not have to think our way through it we want to be able to just come out and put the bridges together and be ready for whatever flooding possibilities might happen in this area."

It is critical for firefighters to be ready because flooding can strike at a moment's notice.
