KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Was it a harmless football pool or criminal activity? That's the question police in Luzerne County are trying to answer.
The Wyoming Valley West Middle School is a place of learning, at least it should be. So when a football pool was discovered last month, school administrators acted quickly.
School officials, the superintendent and School Board President Jose Mazur got an anonymous tip that a pool was being played inside the teacherŐs lounge. Superintendent Chuck Suppon came to the school and sure enough found the pool on a wall. He removed it and called police.
"I'm not so sure it's an appropriate practice or something that should take place in a school. That's what we were very concerned about," said Suppon.
He says schools have to be about education, not recreation or gambling. "I'm not sure what we will do with this thing. It's certainly something I wanted to deal with but given the light of what's happening in the county we need to be proactive as far as a school district be on the up and up."
Parents we talked with had mixed opinions on the seriousness of the football pool. Jack Coslett of Kingston said, "It's done in a middle school. It should not be done around a school, around certain students. There are kids. Everybody has the pool, they are talking about it, they don't need to hear that.Ó
Kingston police say they want the state police to take over the investigation, and Suppon said he could not comment if there was an internal investigation underway at the school.
Those involved in this football pool could face charges if investigators determine a crime was committed. | |
