STROUDSBURG - Jake the dog is trained and housebroken, and very lovable. He's also homeless. His owner had to give him up because she lost her home to foreclosure.
"He's an eight year old dog who for eight years has had the same woman care for him and now he has nobody and he's here waiting," said Monroe County SPCA Manager Shirley McClanahan.
She explained as foreclosure rates go up more and more animals lose their homes. Some owners can't afford to keep them, others aren't allowed to have pets in small apartments or rental homes.
"It's really sad for these animals who are used to having a loving home, due to no reason of their own, they're having to be surrendered," said McClanahan.
About one out of every three dogs dropped off lately is a foreclosure pet.
McClanahan said, "I'm out here with a box of kleenex crying with them because I know how I would feel if I had to give up mine."
Jackie Syfor held back tears as she gave up Daisy for adoption. Daisy is a two year old mixed breed. The Syfor family couldn't keep her because they have to move.
McClanahan said it's tough to watch people leave their best friends behind so she tries to help - and does the best she can to find dogs like Daisy and Jake new homes.
