Former Clarks Green Woman Remembered

Former Clarks Green Woman Remembered - Friday, June 5, 2009 at 6:30PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY --A former Lackawanna County woman is being remembered as an outstanding scientist and friend.
28-year-old Caroline Coffey was found murdered in Ithaca, New York, Wednesday. Police say Coffey was killed by her husband, Blazej Kot who allegedly slashed her throat, then tried to kill himself. The couple had been married for just one month.

The Clarks Green native graduated from Scranton Prep in 1998 and earned a biology degree from the University of Scranton.

People there remember her fondly. A professor at the University of Scranton calls Caroline talented and vivacious. She was working at Cornell University doing stem cell research.

For four years Caroline Coffey walked these halls at University of Scranton. She experimented in this lab and discovered her talent for research. Dr. Mike Sulzinski, professor of biology says “she spent many hours in this room. Always very meticulous worker, careful scientist and talented young woman."

Dr. Mike Sulzinski taught Caroline but considers her more than a student. Even more than a friend. "Caroline wanted to be just like me. I graduated from Cornell. She followed in my footsteps. So in many ways she's not any other student. She is my protégé."

Family mourned at her parents' home in Clarks Green Friday. Caroline leaves behind her mother, father and a brother. She dedicated her 2007 doctoral dissertation to them.

As for her husband, Sulzinski says he only met him once. Sulzinski says he was “soft spoken gentleman. Nothing other than that. Nothing whatsoever. She was very in love with him.

But one month after their Costa Rican wedding, Caroline was slashed. Her husband charged with her murder. Sulzinski says it's a terrible loss. “Absolute shock for such a talented young woman who had so much to give. Not just as person as a professional scientist.

Police say her husband tried to kill himself after a high speed chase. He's under heavy guard at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. He's charged with second degree murder.
