WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- After 28 years in education, Jack Wolensky learned in just 20 minutes he'd serve two years probation for stealing from Dallas School District funds.

"I think there should've been some sort of confinement, whether that was at home or what," said Dennis Gochoel, a school board member. "He needed a month to sit and think."

But the sentence fit the crime -- two years probation and 100 hours of community service for one count of theft.

Wolensky is a former teacher, guidance counselor, and athletic director at Dallas. In February, he admitted to stealing close to $25,000 from a student activity fund and sports fundraising organizations.

In court, Wolensky apologized to his students, colleagues, and everyone associated with the Dallas School District. He choked up when he said he embarrassed his family and lost his career. But some question his sincerity.

"I think there's some degree of remorse, but unfortunately Mr. Wolensky had the audacity to ask the school district for an early retirement settlement," added Gochoel. "And that just kind of leaves some doubt in mine and other people's minds, as to, is he really as contrite as he could be?"

Gochoel says the bigger issue is sending the right message to students.

"Our students need to know they're important, and they're going to be taken seriously, and not taken advantage of," concluded Gochoel.

Wolensky already paid nearly $25,000 in restitution. Gochoel says the auditor general continues investigating if more money was taken. If so, Wolensky is court-ordered to pay it back. District officials think the total is more than $60,000.
