Forum at Temple University Focuses on Hazleton

Forum at Temple University Focuses on Hazleton - Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 04:06AM EST

PHILADELPHIA -- Illegal immigration was the focus of a special forum this week at Temple University in Philadelphia. It focused on the controversial efforts in Hazleton to stop the flow of undocumented immigrants into the city.

Temple University organized this forum to take a closer look at illegal immigration and how it impacts America.

It was prompted by a class at Temple called "War in Hazleton." Hazleton's efforts to tackle the issue gained national attention. Mayor Lou Barletta was asked to talk about the controversial law.

But the discussion went into many different directions including how "political" the issue has become.

Temple Law Professor Jan Ting said, "All these politicians just want to get re-elected. They want to look tough and compassionate at the same time. They want to appeal to every constituency. They want to make every constituent think this guy's really on my side."

And much of the talk focused on corporations -- how they, in the opinion of one professor, do nothing to help address illegal immigration.

Professor Lori Zett says, "You can't protect America from people when you don't protect America from what big business is doing - taking our jobs out!"

Many of those who attended were students who are trying to understand the possible impact illegal immigration has on their generation. Shauna Mulligan said, "Immigration policy sort of was one of the issues my opinion wasn't very strong on . Earlier this year I educated myself a bit more on it."

Michele Montalvo said, "I think immigration policy is really pressing on the minds of the American public, especially with people living in Northeastern Pennsylvania - with the issues in Hazleton."

The forum illustrated just how complicated this issue really is.
