WILKES-BARRE -- May is Foster Care Awareness month. On any given day there are 20,000 children living in foster care in Pennsylvania. Even with this assistance many more children are in need of a home.
Many times relatives of the children in need of foster care step forward, but other times guardians have to be sought out. Children and Youth Services handle each case individually. They seek to keep siblings together, to keep children in their same school systems and to find individuals with open homes and open hearts.
The children in need of foster care run all ages and many of them have suffered from abuse and neglect. They are in need of special families. Children and Youth Services works to connect them to the right adults. They also realize the foster parenting process can be difficult for all involved and offers a variety of services for both the families and children.
WYOU Interactive talks about the need for foster care, the difficulties involved and what it takes to participate in the foster program with Marijo Sullivan of Luzerne County Children and Youth and David Gaugler of the Kinship Care Program. | |
