SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- People who live in a West Scranton neighborhood are upset over a foul odor that's been invading their community.
It's coming from a lot that was the scene of a fire at Piazza's Provisions on Robinson Street on February 5th.
The building stored frozen food which has rotted since the fire.
George Hulse said, "It's been hell. It really has been hell. The smell has been horrendous."
People who live there have been dealing with the odor for weeks.
A demolition crew is removing debris from the site five months after the fire.
The clean up work is stirring up the stench.
Hulse said, "It smells like somebody has died and you just can't shake the smell."
George Hulse and his wife moved into their St. Francis Cabrini Avenue home last month and soon discovered the nauseating situation.
The Hulses bought citronella candles for their deck, not to keep the bugs away, but to try and curb the horrific smell.
Flies are also becoming a big problem.
Resident Joseph Hazzouri said, "We don't go in the backyard anymore because every time the kids go back there it's just 20 minutes of swatting flies."
Neighbors say they can't get satisfaction from city hall.
Hazzouri said, "I called licensing and permits and the health department in city hall a number of times and the phone just rang."
Eyewitness news paid a visit to Mark Seitzinger, the city's director of licensing permits and inspection.
Seitzinger sayid he was unaware of the problem and he'll order the property owner to take care of it.
"The property itself needs to be cleaned up thoroughly. The smell needs to be removed and they're going to have to get an exterminator to remove any kind of bug or anything around there," said Seitzinger.
The demolition crew is expected to remove the debris on Wednesday.
