FRACKVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY -- People who live here say petty crimes, such as stealing from cars, is enough to make them want to step up and help police patrol.
"Since yesterday, I must've received 15 calls," said Frackville Constable Paul Martin, who is establishing a town crime watch.

"Years ago, if you did something wrong, somebody would either call your mom or dad or give you a good swift kick," said Mayor Delmar Phillips. "Community involvement isn't what it used to be. I'm afraid in this day and age that somebody's going to get hurt."

That's why he's glad to hear people want the crime watch up and running.

"A lot happens on the main street like fights," said Tiffany Bubnis, who lives on Oak Street. She welcomes the crime watch. "Being that everybody is usally out on the main street, people can watch out if anything happens and call the cops."

"We're only a five-man department right now, but our one officer is deployed, so we're down to four guys, and we can't be everywhere at once," said Police Chief Christopher Hand.

The mayor says nearly $10,000 in vandalism was done last year, but he thinks this neighborhood crime watch will cut that number down.

"I hope it will make the town safer and people can enjoy the town again," Phillips said.

Martin also says local businesses are really helping by donating flashlights and radios for the crime watch members to use. They hope to have as many as 50 volunteers by month's end. You can stop by the municipal building with any questions.
