SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Volunteers for the Commission of Economic Opportunity began serving free lunches this week to children 18-years-old and under in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wyoming counties.

The lunches are prepared by the Weinberg Food Bank and are delivered to distribution sites in all three counties. There are currently 28 distribution sites. The lunches are available each weekday.

The program was established to fill the gap left when schools let out for the summer. Supporters say many kids go without lunches when school is not in session. The program supplies about 1,000 free meals each weekday.
