FREELAND, LUZERNE COUNTY- People in Freeland say they are getting sick from noxious odors. Those odors, they say, are coming from a nearby sewer plant.
At times it gets so bad some people say they got sick. Some say they never open their window, even in summer. Stanley Schenk has smelled it. “The odor is bad at times, basically in the early evening and early mornings. That tells me that's possibly when the men leave at quitting time, maybe something can be done in the evening or nighttime, I don't know," he told Eyewitness News.
This neighborhood is right next to the Freeland Sewer Treatment Plant. The plant’s been here for 40 years. Jack Brogan is the Manager. He said, People are saying they got sick. I don't know. We have people working here 30 years and they're not sick."
Brogan showed eyewitness news a state D. E.P. report from an inspection done in July. The plant was found to be operating with no major problems, including air quality problems. "The sewer plant has been here. It’s a sewer plant. There is some smell at times but we're trying to hold down what we can."
State officials say they found no major issues at the sewer plant and did recommend some measures to reduce odors. They also say they are monitoring the situation and told neighbors to contact them immediately if they smell sickening odors.
The plant will be renovated sometime next year. They say that will resolve many of these odor issues.
