Fuel Spill, School Bus Accident in Back Mountain - Monday, September 28, 2009 at 5:45PM EST

WYOMING/LUZERNE COUNTIES -- A white box truck traveling Route 29 from Tunkhannock down to Route 309 in Dallas and Shavertown spilled transmission fluid on the road.

The truck stopped at a shopping center in Dallas where 150 gallons of fluid spilled into the parking lot.

When combined with some light rain the fluid created slippery conditions along Route 29 and Route 309. Officials believe those slippery conditions caused a school bus accident at the intersection of Routes 309 and 415 just before 4:00 P. M. No children on the bus were hurt. The bus was from the Dallas School District.

Parts of Route 29 southbound from Tunkhannock to Route 309 are closed as crews clean up the mess. The southbound lanes of Route 309 are also closed from Route 29 down to Center Hill Road in Shavertown.

Fire crews, county EMA and the DEP are all on hand to clean up the spill. Officials say some of the fluid did work its way into Toby Creek and they are trying to contain that part of the leak.
