WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- The show will go on at the F. M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre as major roof repairs are almost finished. $150,000 in federal money will help.
Chunks of the roof and ceiling have fallen through the main lobby because of years of leaking. People have taken notice. June Kearns of Wilkes-Barre said, "It needs to be fixed, itŐs a landmark."
A landmark that's getting a new roof. Marilyn Santarelli, the Kirby CenterŐs Executive Director said, "To use an interesting phrase we've been sticking gum in these holes for a while."
Federal money will help finish major roof repairs that started in late May. A series of small grants helped complete the work until this point.
On Tuesday, the Kirby Center learned $150,000 in federal money is approved to finish the project. Most of the work is already done, like on the roof top.
People like Andrew Matiska say it's about time. "It has to be done I guess. It's leaking, that's what it's all about," said Matiska.
The repairs are expected to be finished in a few weeks, just in time for a full slate of fall and winter shows. The last time there were any renovations at Kirby Center was in 1986.
The new repairs are expected to help the roof last more than 20 years. | |
