GPS Mistake Leads Repo Man to Wrong House - Monday, January 11, 2010 at 5:55PM EST

SWOYERSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Last Wednesday, Stan Kardish came home to find police outside his home along with a very apologetic repossession company.

"It was just like total confusion," said Kardish.

Kardish says a repo company broke into his house by accident. ÒThe girl saw an envelope on the table with my name on it and she said to the guy, now this is her quote, I think we're in the wrong house," said Kardish.

The repo company was performing a right to reclaim abandoned property. That's when a landlord cleans out an abandoned house if their tenant was evicted or moved out without notice.

Kardish says the company, Higgins and Lovvit, out of California contracted the repo job to a local company, who meant to go to 238 Academy in Wilkes-Barre.

The company blamed a faulty GPS system and faces no charges. Kardish says it all seemed a bit fishy. "What else do I have to think about except being broken besides being robbed, even my identity," said Kardish.

We punched in 238 Academy in Wilkes-Barre and followed our GPSÕS directions. The actual address is more than 6 miles from the in Luzerne address.

On the Wilkes-Barre address, Eyewitness News found a posted copy of the right to reclaim after the company found the right address.

Kardish is a physical trainer and earns money by the hour. He lost a dayÕs worth of work and needs to be reimbursed for his busted lock. ÒI don't want anybody to feel like I felt that morning," he said.

And whether or not Kardish gets reimbursed, he says it will take a while to get back his piece of mind. Kardish tells Eyewitness News he's confident Swoyersville police handled his break in accordingly.

He says officers were told the repo company was legit and that they made an honest mistake.
