CHESTNUTHILL TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY - Twenty-two dollars worth of seeds will help stock five food banks with fresh produce.
A garden planted with seeds of inspiration and watered with love will feed thousands of people in Monroe County. Garden founder Tammy Graeber smiled,"It is spectacular."
Girl Scout Claudia Krautkremer said,"It's like a good cause there's a lot of hungry people in this sad time right now and they need food and like they can't afford it."
Graeber founded the garden in Chestnuthill Township last year. She realized the community needed something like this while volunteering at a food bank. She explained,"I recognized that there was no nutritional value in any of the food that was being donated. A lot of it was processed foods, canned goods, pop tarts, candy."
So she got two and a half acres of land and gathered help. Community members donated a greenhouse, fencing and garden lining. Graeber said,"It's just a community project all together."
People in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program pitched in to plant. Bob Wacker said,"I think it's a good thing to bring the food to the pantries and give fresh produce away."
And so did a younger generation including a Girl Scout troop from East Stroudsburg. Krautkremer laughed,"It's fun cause like when you're having breaks you can like throw mud balls and stuff."
The volunteers planted about 5,000 seedlings. They'll harvest them later in the summer. Graeber said,"We're really excited because we're growing broccoli which is really nutritious."
And it's not just broccoli. There's also cabbage, cucumbers, squash, lettuce, and lots of other healthy food. It's all produce grown in the sunshine of caring to feed our community.
