WILKES-BARRE, Luzerne County- With high prices at the gas pump, the commute to work is getting more expensive lately. Many people have now decided to take their bikes to work, including one Wilkes University Computer Science Professor.

John Koch combines his commute with exercise and saving money. For the past two years John Koch has peddled his way to Wilkes University. Koch spoke with WBRE News, "I started riding from my home in Shavertown, down the back mountain trail through Luzerne onto the dyke and levy trail, all the way to Wilkes."

Koch makes the eight mile trek to class to teach computer science. All, while pinching pennies at those pricey pumps. John Koch added, "It takes 17 miles a day riding my bike instead of driving in, so I save a couple hundred dollars a year and no wear and tear on the car."

Koch's other ride to work is getting a tune up at “Around Town Bicycles” in Wilkes-Barre. Tom Jones is the Co-Owner of the Bike Shop, "I think the revolution's begun."

Jones says once gas soared above $3.35 a gallon, more people traded their four wheels in for two. Jones added, "We're starting to see people use bicycles now more so for transportation along with recreation." Warmer weather means a lot more riders.

Many sporting accessories like this bike messenger bag. Koch uses one to carry his books and papers. It's simplifying a commute that's good for his health and his wallet.

Koch added, "Its particularly nice. I can get in, not have to find a parking place, not pay for parking." Tom Jones suggests two bike maintenance tips for you Check the air pressure in your tires and lubricate your chain every few weeks.

You always need to wear a helmet too. Make sure the strap is tight and secure and the adjustments are right below the ear.
