MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Gas prices have dropped like a rock across the country, keeping in line with falling oil prices. Federal statistics show a price of regular is going around $2.22 a gallon. But at least two gas stations have caught drivers' attention. Their prices are well above $3 a gallon.
Folks say they see the price sign at USA Mini Mart along Montage Mountain Road in Moosic, do a "double take" and keep going. $3.58 is what regular is selling at. That's $1.34 higher than the state's average. "I believe they're taking advantage of people coming off the interstate," Charles Lacey of Scranton said.
Down the road, the USA Mini Mart off of River Street is equally priced. Regular gasoline sold for $3.40 a gallon. Few drivers were seen pumping at either place.
Eyewitness News left messages with the owner. Both stations are owned by State Petroleum Distributors, Olyphant.
"Well it's a free market, so they can charge whatever they want," Lacey said. Drivers are left to guess why two stations only about two miles apart are priced significantly higher than competitors.
